Terms of Service
Last updated: 9 March 2026
These terms govern your use of the ReturnSorted service, operated by ReturnSorted Ltd (“ReturnSorted”, “we”, “us”, “our”). By using ReturnSorted, you agree to these terms. Please read them carefully.
1. What ReturnSorted is
ReturnSorted is software that helps you prepare and submit your UK Self Assessment tax return directly to HMRC. You submit using your own HMRC credentials - ReturnSorted is the tool you file through, not an agent filing on your behalf.
ReturnSorted is not a tax adviser, accountant, or financial adviser. The service does not constitute financial, tax, or legal advice. We provide software tools and calculations; the accuracy of the information you enter and your decision to submit remain your responsibility.
2. Eligibility
To use ReturnSorted, you must:
- Be a UK taxpayer required to file a Self Assessment tax return.
- Be at least 18 years old.
- Have a valid HMRC online account.
- Have a tax situation within the scope of what ReturnSorted covers (shown clearly before you begin your return).
3. Your account
You can use ReturnSorted without creating an account. If you do create an account (via magic link), you are responsible for keeping access to your email account secure. Notify us immediately at support@returnsorted.co.uk if you believe your account has been compromised.
4. Payment
ReturnSorted costs £49 per tax year. Payment is taken before you submit your return to HMRC. All payments are processed by Stripe and are subject to Stripe’s terms.
Refunds. Because the core value of the service (HMRC submission) is delivered at the point of filing, we do not offer refunds once your return has been submitted to HMRC. If you have paid but not yet submitted, contact us and we will consider your request on a case-by-case basis.
Prices may change for future tax years. We will give reasonable notice of any price increase before the start of a new filing period.
5. Your responsibilities
You are responsible for:
- The accuracy of all information you enter into your return. ReturnSorted calculates tax based on the figures you provide - we cannot verify them against source documents.
- Reviewing your return in full before submitting. The summary screen shows everything that will be filed with HMRC.
- Meeting any HMRC deadlines. ReturnSorted does not monitor or notify you of filing deadlines.
- Keeping copies of your tax records in accordance with HMRC requirements (generally 22 months after the end of the tax year for employees; 5 years and 10 months for the self-employed).
- Using the service only for your own personal tax return. You may not use ReturnSorted to file on behalf of another person without their knowledge and consent.
6. HMRC connection
To submit your return, you authorise ReturnSorted to connect to your HMRC account via OAuth. This grants us temporary, scoped access to read your tax data and submit your return on your instruction. You can revoke this authorisation at any time through your HMRC online account.
We do not store your HMRC credentials. Access tokens are held in session-only, encrypted cookies and expire when your session ends.
7. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, ReturnSorted’s total liability to you for any claim arising from use of the service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months preceding the claim.
We are not liable for:
- HMRC decisions, penalties, or interest charges, regardless of whether they relate to a return filed using ReturnSorted.
- Errors in your return caused by information you provided.
- Loss of profits, revenue, data, or any indirect or consequential loss.
- Service unavailability caused by HMRC system outages or third-party failures.
Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, fraud, or any other liability that cannot be excluded under English law.
8. Intellectual property
All content, software, and materials on the ReturnSorted platform are owned by or licensed to ReturnSorted Ltd. You may not copy, modify, or distribute any part of the service without our written permission.
You retain ownership of the data you enter into your return. By using the service, you grant us a limited licence to process that data solely to provide the service to you.
9. Acceptable use
You must not:
- Use the service for any unlawful purpose, including filing a fraudulent tax return.
- Attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of the service or its infrastructure.
- Interfere with or disrupt the service.
- Use automated tools to access the service without our permission.
10. Suspension and termination
We may suspend or terminate your access to ReturnSorted if you breach these terms, if we reasonably believe your use poses a security risk, or if we are required to do so by law.
You may close your account at any time by contacting support@returnsorted.co.uk. Closing your account does not affect submitted tax records, which we retain as required by law.
11. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by email at least 14 days before they take effect. Continued use of the service after that date constitutes acceptance of the updated terms.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by English law. Any disputes will be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
